From flax seed to linen napkin on one square metre in your own garden

1m2 flax invites the public to participate in the journey from flax seed to linen: more than 330 participants from all over Flanders registered this year to sow, harvest and process their own square metre of flax in their own garden. Through monthly newsletters and online video tutorials, they go through all the steps from seed to textile fibre and woven napkin over the course of a year. Participants exchange experiences, tips and tricks in a lively Facebook community. A joint hands-on programme offers insights into sustainable cultivation and design.

The result? Lots of new insights and a homemade napkin based on your own harvest, which you take with you to a festive closing event. Growing flax yourself, seeing it grow from seed to fibre and ultimately to fabric, naturally raises questions about how we make and use textiles today. And that undoubtedly involves a good deal of trial and error, because flax can be a bit stubborn. And so can the Belgian weather gods. 1m2 vlas wants to inspire you to make more sustainable choices.

From December 2025, you can register to sow flax in your own garden and go through all the processes from flax seed to linen!

1m2 flax is a project by Texture, museum of flax and textiles, in collaboration with The Linen Project Netherlands. Together, they are building a community that recognises and appreciates the origin of their materials and the associated processes.

Project realised with the support of the Sustainable Materials and Energy Management Fund, managed by the King Baudouin Foundation.
