A garden for the museum:
In the autumn of 2024, Texture will welcome a group of 90 ambitious second-year students from the Landscape and Garden Architecture programme at KASK for a special residency. As part of HOGENT's Rewilding Materials research project, they will work on an innovative design for the outdoor space surrounding the museum.
In addition to the challenge of the terrain and the balance between public and semi-public functions, the project challenges the students to design an inspiring 'maker's garden'. - Ruben Joye
RESIDENCY
During their residency, the students are conducting design research for the redevelopment of Texture's outdoor space as a living laboratory. They are inspired by the vision of Spanish architect Jordi Ferrando, the historical site and heritage story in the museum, other urban public spaces and regional landscapes. In addition, they are researching the cultural history of perennial dye and textile plants and international practices relating to museum, community and research gardens.
We designed the museum square as a studio garden: a green outdoor space where people can harvest and work, but also live and relax. A biodiverse and climate-resilient place for people, plants and animals in the city.
SHOWCASE
The residency resulted in 20 design proposals with sustainability and connection as core values. The working models and visualisations go beyond just a garden; they strive for a tangible link between the museum, the river and the city. With a new connection to the Leie and by integrating existing recreational infrastructure and the BUDA island in a thoughtful way, the designs aim for a harmonious embedding in the city.
