Draad. From matter to story

27 Jan 2024 > 18 Feb 2024

We encounter textiles every day. Think of the sheets we sleep in, the towels we dry ourselves with or the clothes we wear. We have a long and personal history with textiles. It is also one of the oldest materials and earliest forms of technology. Draad revealed the versatility of textiles with stories from thirty artists and a mix of techniques, materials and interpretations. A celebration of the creative freedom of textiles.

The group exhibition Draad. From Matter to Story brought together thirty artists who approach the medium in a unique way. Textiles were not only considered as fibre here; they were used as an artistic palette with which artists bring their ideas, experiences and visions to life. It forms a search for identity and a visual representation of socially critical issues. It weaves a narrative thread, as a carrier of emotion and stories, inviting the viewer to wonder and dialogue.

For this project, Texture worked closely with Kunstwerkt, the organisation that supports everyone who makes art. The exhibition came about after an open call in the autumn of 2023, to which more than 600 diverse artists who use textiles as an artistic language responded. A three-member jury consisting of Han Decorte (freelance curator, lecturer and scenographer), Indré Svirplyté (visual artist) and Benjamin Mengistu Navet (visual artist) reviewed the many submissions.

As an open medium, textiles intertwine with other disciplines. As an interplay of form, construction, material and technique.
