Dyeing with Pomegranate

Discover how something as simple as a pomegranate peel can be used to dye textiles. In this workshop, we explore the world of natural dyeing together, using a colorant that has been interwoven with Iranian culture for generations.

We begin around the table, peeling together. As in a kitchen, this naturally creates space for stories, memories, and exchange. From there, we move to the studio. You will receive a clear introduction to preparing fibers, mordanting, and the dyeing process. You will also get hands-on experience yourself. You will experiment with fabrics and yarns and discover how different mordants bring out a rich palette of tones—from warm yellows and soft earthy shades to greys and layered nuances. By playing with overdyeing, you will learn how color builds up: slowly, in layers, and full of character.

In this workshop, you will not only learn techniques, but also take part in a collective process of making, remembering, and exchanging. As you work, you will reflect on the knowledge and care embedded in these techniques, and how they are passed down from generation to generation. You will go home with a selection of naturally dyed samples, while the larger body of dyed materials becomes part of a shared process that also feeds into the artist’s ongoing work. More than an individual workshop, this is a collective natural dyeing experience in which making, sharing, and exchange are central.
