Texture preserves a collection that highlights the rich craftsmanship and entrepreneurship of flax and textiles. The Leie region has always been closely linked to flax. Thanks to the Golden River, special knowledge and skills developed and the region grew to become the hub of flax processing and trade, not only within Belgium and Europe, but worldwide. Texture preserves these traces of the past, but at the same time looks ahead to the heritage of the future.
#1 FLAX
The core of our work. Tools, machines, raw materials related to flax production and trade. This collection is a reference collection in Flanders and even includes absolute masterpieces such as the Vansteenkiste-Van Maercke swing turbine and the Leterme wearing machine. It also includes a demonstration collection of flax tools. We are also building a contemporary collection of industrial design and flax innovations.
#2 TEXTILES
When you say flax, you say textiles. Here you will find objects, finished products and clothing related to textile design and technology. It shows the many faces of linen. From authentic rough flax workers' clothing to gossamer-fine linen petticoats. From the refined luxury of table linen to the sacred purity of religious textiles. Of particular note are the collection of Kortrijk damask, an extensive lace collection and the bequest of Joseph de Bethune.
#3 DOCUMENTATION
This collection contains archival and audiovisual material such as photographs and films, as well as sample books, design drawings and weaving, lace or embroidery patterns. Testimonials and interviews are also preserved here. It adds colour and context to the object collection and is becoming increasingly important in our collection policy. An indispensable source for research, public outreach and future interpretations of the collection.
#4 LIBRARY
The collection of historical and contemporary publications, scientific and technical studies, books, catalogues and magazines on textiles supports the entire museum's activities. In 2022, we were able to incorporate the specialist library of the General Belgian Flax Association. The library is open to researchers, students and textile professionals, as well as interested visitors.
