KEY FIGURES & ROLES 

Tim Duerinck is not a traditional instrument maker. For years, he has been experimenting with new forms and sustainable materials such as polystyrene and carbon. At the invitation of Texture, he spent five months in an open studio building a cello from flax fibres. Flax is light, strong and has natural damping properties.  

Together with textile designer Esther Van Schuylenbergh, Tim searched for the right fabrics and weaves to enhance the beauty of the flax composite. Eco-Technilin assisted them with material advice, and weaving mills Deltracon and Sofa Cover produced the fabric samples.  

HISTORICAL FABRIC 

An ancient instrument based on an ancient raw material, but with a contemporary touch and modern sound. Cellist Benjamin Glorieux experienced this too. He fine-tuned Tim's design and composed a special piece of music for it, based on old flax songs from the Texture collection. The icing on the cake was a flax cello concert with the students of the Kortrijk Conservatory in the museum's Crown Hall. Music and textile history in perfect harmony!
