Becoming a Body of Water
With 'Becoming a Body of Water', Sarah Westphal creates an immersive installation on the top floor of Texture. You are immersed in a meditative setting where landscape and underwater world converge. The work explores the relationship between humans and the ocean, between animals and plants, and between natural and artificial materials.
Westphal's fascination with life beneath the water's surface grew out of her work 'Fôret océanique', created for Triënnale Kortrijk 2021. To experience what it feels like to be a small human being within the vast oceanic ecosystem, she learned to dive and film underwater. This led her to explore the breathtaking underwater world of Japan with her camera. This video forms part of 'Becoming a Body of Water' and reveals hidden symbiotic relationships within the underwater landscape. The installation invites a connection with our surroundings and the discovery of new ways to understand the world through all our senses.
In her multidisciplinary work, Sarah Westphal investigates concepts such as time, perception and consciousness. She delves into questions about our relationship with our environment, exploring themes such as the meaning of personal space and the fragile ecosystem of the underwater world. Her work engages multiple senses through the use of sculpture, video, photography and light, encouraging the viewer to reconnect with their surroundings.
'Becoming a Body of Water' is part of Triënnale Kortrijk 2024, a trail of art installations at 14 unique locations across historic Kortrijk. The theme is 'After Paradise'. What comes after the harmony and abundance of paradise? The post-paradise confronts us with raw material shortages, social tensions and a heavily polluted environment. Yet 'After Paradise' aims to tell a positive story. Taking responsibility and empowerment are central to this. The artistic programme reflects this, with a focus on works that challenge us to engage in dialogue, reflection and action.
Those wishing to experience Sarah Westphal's work can visit Texture Kortrijk from 29 June to 6 October 2024, Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm.
